Associate Attorney

Job Description

The Law Office of Maritza S. Nelson, LLC is seeking an Associate Attorney in Columbus, Ohio. As the practice grows, we are looking for people to grow with us as we seek to build a different kind of law firm.

We help entrepreneurs, founders, dreamers, and innovators pursue their passion without worrying that legal "stuff" might come back to bite them. Our clients range from start-ups to growing businesses and nonprofits with nearly 100 employees across various industries.

We recognize that to provide sophisticated legal counsel to serious entrepreneurs, we must take the time to get to know our clients and their goals and what keeps them up at night. We must help them understand how the law applies in the “real” world. And we do most of our work on a flat fee basis because, contrary to popular belief, our clients don’t pay us for our time. Our value is in our knowledge, experience, and ability to solve their problems.

We’re looking for an attorney with at least three (3) years of experience representing business organizations who can provide innovative, yet practical advice to small business owners and nonprofit directors. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented team player passionate about entrepreneurship and client service, committed to constantly learning, and goal-driven. Like most law firms, we also expect candidates to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and think critically about client problems while following the Firm’s policies and procedures.

In our role as outside general counsel, an associate attorney will have the opportunity to:
  • Meet directly with clients, providing advice and guidance while building long-term relationships
  • Form new business entities, including for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, and social enterprises
  • Draft a wide range of business contracts
  • Counsel nonprofit clients on governance matters and applying for/maintaining their tax-exempt status
  • Assist growing clients with hiring and managing employees and independent contractors
  • Protect clients’ intellectual property, especially copyrights and trademarks

Location: Columbus, OH, hybrid work environment (both work from home and in office as needed), full-time
Compensation: Combination of base salary and bonuses for achieving Firm goals, resulting in a compensation package of approximately $70,000 - $90,000+.

To apply, follow the following instructions precisely. Send your resume and cover letter to jobs@msnlawoffice.com. Your cover letter should be exactly two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, discuss why you want to work with entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. In the second paragraph, discuss your career goals and how this position fits your goals. Conclude your second paragraph with the following statement: “I have read the job description in full, followed the instructions completely, and I look forward to learning more about the position.”

Based on your cover letter and resume, candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to schedule a preliminary interview over Zoom. From there, candidates will be asked to respond to a writing prompt and to provide professional references from clients or past supervisors. Selected candidates will then be invited in for in-person interviews.

The Firm is an equal opportunity employer. People of color, women, and LGBTQ+ people are encouraged to apply.
